On Saturday, June 25th, nine motivated hikers met in Sisters at 8 a.m. to head for the summit of Black Butte. It was a beautiful morning with clear skies and a comfortable temperature of 58 degrees. We caravanned to the trailhead on 5 miles of bumpy dirt roads once turning onto the access road to Black Butte trailhead. After a short talk about what to expect from the hike and making sure everyone was prepared, we started heading up the trail just after 9 am. The trail is 2 miles of a constant moderate uphill grade that gains 1550 feet of elevation to the summit. It is a well maintained trail that starts out in the forest and then opens up to beautiful views of Broken Top, the 3 Sisters, and Mt Washington to the west.

As you continue up the trail around the east side of Black Butte, views of Mt Jefferson, Mt Hood, and Mt Adams come into view. The mountain views from the trail and summit could not have been better that day! After taking plenty of pictures from the summit and taking a nice break to rehydrate and refuel, we headed back down to the trailhead. Everyone did a great job in preparing for the first hike and it paid off in the end with a very successful hike! It was a fantastic day!

Congratulations to Jake, Tiffany, Michelle, Steve, Tim, Ken, Logan, and Michelle for successfully completing the first of the four Summits. Nice work!

We have room for a few more motivated hikers to join the Apex Challenge with hikes at Black Crater 7/23, Mt Bachelor 8/6, and South Sister 9/3. Please email me at [email protected] for more information.
